"I am an endless barrel of exposition!"
—Mr. Verres, to Sarah

Edward Verres is Tedd's father and the former head of the local FBI branch of paranormal investigators, now "promoted" to head of paranormal diplomacy[1] (position which didn't exist before).

Mr. Verres has extensive knowledge of magic, immortals, alien politics, and alternate dimensions. Additionally, he is something of a celebrity in the local world of the paranormal, having connections to beings of supernatural and paranormal backgrounds. He has been seen using magic on multiple occasions, both using wands[2] and unaided (as in the case of his identity-confirmation spell).[3] Later confirmed to be specifically wizard.[4] He speaks Uryuomoco.

Work[]

As head of paranormal division[]

At the beginning of the comic, Mr. Verres' job was to prevent the widespread knowledge of the paranormal by creating elaborate cover-ups[5][6] for things such as aliens, genetic experimentation, and magic. He has also been personally involved in investigating mysterious occurrences along with agents Cranium and Wolf.[7]

Mr. Verres is fiercely protective of his family; this has led his superiors in the FBI to question whether he is "too close" to the situations that occur in Moperville. After using excessive force outside of the scope of protocol to protect his niece from Abraham during the wizard's attack,[2] and due to the fact the incident was not cleaned up properly, Mr. Verres was removed from his position. Instead, he was promoted to the head of the newly created department of Paranormal Diplomacy by his boss, Assistant Director Liefeld.[1] This is at least in part because of the possible backlash that could result were Verres to be fired.

As head of paranormal diplomacy[]

As head of paranormal diplomacy, he is still part of the agency, but is not directly responsible for choosing strategy how to cover up things happening in Moperville.

It's unknown what exactly he does, but he did at one point stop a deathless alien army of rage from rampaging on earth in search of enlightenment with a chart and exposition.[8]

It probably wasn't the only case, as Arthur mentioned Edward earned the right to be spoiled because he has knack for preventing apocalyptic scenarios.[9]

Backstory[]

Before Shade and Painted Black[]

Edward Verres was involved in the infiltration of the lycanthrope project[10] after becoming aware of the project from Dr. Sciuridae.[11] Mr. Verres promised Dr. Sciuridae to look after Grace.[12]

Tam Eh Tedd (flashback)[]

The uryuoms William and Gillian sought out Mr. Verres[13] to ask for help programming their cosmetic morph device (which became the transformation gun)[14] so that it give them human clone forms. Mr. Verres's son Tedd, who was eavesdropping them, offered to help.[15] When Mr. Verres realized that it made Tedd happier than he had ever been since was traumatized by his mother leaving, he decided to let his son help the uryuoms.[16]

Hidden Genesis and In The Shadows[]

When Magus arrived in this world, Edward Verres, along with agents Wolf and Cranium, tried to investigate the paranormal disturbance. A childlike immortal (Pandora) appeared to them[17] and gave them a cryptic warning.[18] Verres realized that she was an immortal.[19] After their CSI team failed to find physical evidence, Verres, Wolf and Cranium had a meeting about the incident. During the meeting, agent Wolf called Verres's uryuom secretary Lavender an alien and Verres threatened him with sensitivity training (apparently uryuoms are secret even to low-ranking agents such as Wolf).[20] Verres took Wolf and Cranium off the case since they had no way to investigate it.[21] Instead he decided to ask some friends for help[22] (possibly the immortals Helena and Demetrius).

Layers (flashback)[]

Once when Edward talked to Lavender about how Tedd's mental health improved as he worked on the clone forms and about his plans to give clone forms to all uryuoms, they were overheard by agent Bishop[23] and Assistant Director Liefeld ordered Edward to take away the transformation gun from Tedd.[24] Edward managed to persuade Leifeld to let Tedd keep the transformation gun on the condition that he kept the plans for the clone forms secret from Tedd.[25]

History (in-comic present)[]

Shade[]

When Grace sought out Tedd and he let her into the family's house on Saturday, January 26, Mr. Verres recognized her.[26] He let her stay at the house and told Tedd to tell no one other than Elliot and Sarah about Grace and to ask Sarah to buy clothes for her.[27] When Tedd asked his father how he knew her, Mr. Verres only answered "DGB" for "dad's government business".[28] When Grace came home transformed after shopping the next day and Sarah and Elliot accused Tedd of transforming her,[29] Mr. Verres told them about the lycanthrope project.[10] Then he, Tedd and Elliot looked for more information about Grace in a storage closet.[30]

Sister[]

Two days later (Tuesday, January 29), after Tedd and Grace fell asleep on a couch together and then barely escaped being caught sharing a bed,[31] Mr. Verres, who was going away on a business trip, admonished Tedd not to have sex with Grace but let slip that she can't get pregnant while in her half-squirrel form.[32]

While Mr. Verres was away Tedd and Elliot snuck into PTTAOLUTASF to use the Dewitchery Diamond (because Tedd had transformed Elliot and couldn't transform him back because the transformation gun had broken and the note that Mr. Verres had left saying that he would come back with materials for building more transformation guns was illegible;[33] the use of the Dewitchery Diamond resulted in the creation of Ellen) and were caught. Mr. Verres ordered the guard to release them. When Mr. Verres came home on Thursday, January 31, Grace was missing so he went to Moperville North High School to look for them.[34] He arrived to find Tedd, Grace, Elliot, Ellen, Sarah, Nanase, Susan, Justin and Greg in the aftermath of the second Goo attack.[35] As Elliot was in his cat form, Mr. Verres asked who of him and Ellen is the duplicate.[36]

The group (excluding Greg) went to the Verres family's house.[37] Mr. Verres, Tedd, Grace and Elliot looked at an image of Lord Tedd and General Shade Tail on Tedd's computer. Mr. Verres recognized General Shade Tail from a concept sketch and speculated that the original Grace didn't die in that dimension,[38] which made Tedd angry that he scared Grace.[39] Mr. Verres told Ellen that she couldn't be Elliot but had to be her own person, which made her cry.[40] Then Mr. Verres mentioned that the family has a testing device for the transformation gun.[41] When Elliot asked why Tedd tested the transformation gun on himself (which started the chain of events that led to Ellen's creation), Mr. Verres explained that Tedd often turns into a girl and called it disturbing.[42] After Justin found the illegible note, Mr. Verres explained was it was intended to say.[33] Mr. Verres then took Elliot and Ellen home to Elliot's parents and explained to the parents what had happened.[43] Then he arranged a cover story for Ellen to live with Elliot's family.[44]

Tam Eh Tedd and Painted Black[]

Omn Saturday, March 2, Mr. Verres received a warning[45] and warned Grace to stay indoors while trying to hide how worried he was.[46] Later that day, after Grace defeated Damien, Mr. Verres was happy that Damien was dead and Tedd's friends were unharmed but also angry about their recklessness.[47] When he found Grace and Tedd together sleeping on a couch he was first angry but when Grace whimpered in her sleep he took pity of her and left them alone.[48]

Moping Squirrel[]

Mr. Verres arranged for Grace and Ellen to go to Moperville South High School together, which he told them on Monday, March 4.[49] He also suggested that they throw a party with Tedd, Elliot, Sarah, Nanase, Susan and Justin on Grace's birthday, which was Saturday, March 9. Ellen was happy about the thought of an unsupervised party and Mr. Verres said that it wouldn't be unsupervised.[50] He explained with charts that Ellen is more impulsive than Elliot.[51]

Sister II[]

After Elliot fought a monster at school on Tuesday, March 12, he called Mr. Verres by phone to report the fight. Mr. Verres identified the monster as a bloodgrem.[52] Elliot also told him that he had involuntarily transformed at school, Mr. Verres realized that he had awakened and instructed him to transform in order to use up energy.[53] Elliot asked if Lord Tedd could have sent the bloodgrem but Mr. Verres was sure that it wasn't Lord Tedd since he had investigated him, though he kept what he had found out secret from Tedd and his friends.[54]

Later that day Elliot, Ellen and Sarah gathered at the Verres family's house and Mr. Verres tested Elliot and Ellen with the magic analysis wand,[55] which confirmed that they had awakened. He explained to Tedd, Grace and their friends what magic and awakening is,[56] that Elliot's and Ellen's awakenings due to the Dewitchery Diamond were improper and thus caused energy buildups and would result in all of their new spells for some time being related to the transformations that they got from the awakening,[57] and instructed them to use up magic energy.[58] Then he said that he was going to order spellbooks for Elliot and Ellen (he didn't mention that would make the spellbooks himself[59]) When Elliot referred to himself and Ellen as wizards, Mr. Verres explained what a wizard is.[60]

After Abraham attacked Moperville South High School one the next day (Wednesday, March 13) and Nanase was burned out fighting him, Edward Verres shot him with a strong lightning bolt from a magic wand even though Abraham had surrendered.[61] As a result, assistant director Leifeld removed his from his post as head of the paranormal division but appointed him to the new office of head of paranormal diplomacy because of his valuable connections.[62]

New And Old Flames[]

After Justin and Elliot (in his new superheroine form nicknamed Cheerleadra) fought a fire monster on Tuesday, April 9, Edward, Tedd and Grace watched the news about it.[63] Edward was both happy and unhappy that it wasn't his responsibility. Elliot went to the Verres' house in his his mild-mannered disguise after the fight.[64] Edward used a spell of his own to confirm who he was and what his transformation spell did. He also chastised Elliot for not reading his spellbook.[65] Then Edward and Tedd showed the TV interview of Justin to Elliot.[66] Edward was unhappy that Justin claimed that the superheroine went to him for costume advice instead of claiming ignorance, as it meant that Justin admitted that he knew the superheroine.[67] Then Justin joined the group.[68] Then Cranium called Edward to tell him that Arthur would be interviewed on TV.[69] Thus Edward watched the interview where Arthur said that magic is real.[70] Justin thought Arthur would discredit the incident by coming off as a nutcase but Edward thought Arthur would know that such a strategy would backfire and concluded that he didn't know Arthur's objectives.[71]

One Way Road[]

One Wednesday, May 1, when Grace was planning a date with Tedd, Edward gave her money for the date. When Tedd complained as he thought he should pay since he's the man of them, Edward told him that there is no need to follow that norm in the modern age.[72]

Death Sentence[]

After a giant boar had been seen near Moperville on Sunday, May 12, Adrian Raven called Edward to suggest that they save the boar.[73] Edward said that Arthur wouldn't do anything and that, even if he did act, they would kill the boar.[74] Adrian said that he would save the boar himself, but Edward argued that it would be dangerous and that it would be irresponsible even if it succeeded, and said that he should kill the boar instead.[75]

End Of An Era (flashback)[]

In July, after the interdimensional whale told Tedd about the Moperville magic energy clog, Edward confirmed that magic behaves unusually in Moperville, but when Tedd mentioned ambient energy and the whales, Edward dismissed that as nonsense.[76] Tedd asked his father if he would tell him if he knew what was happening, and Edward promised Tedd that he wouldn't give him misinformation but admitted that he would instead distract Tedd from questions that he didn't want to answer.[77]

Family Tree[]

After Nanase and Ellen were attacked by Not-Tengu at New Year's Eve party, Edward went to the place along with Cranium and Wolf.[78] He was displeased when Wolf let slip that the one who previously defeated Not-Tengu (Noriko[79]) is a legendary monster hunter.[80] Nanase was unhappy about keeping the incident secret and Edward told her that secrecy is the only thing that keeps the world from being overun by people like Not-Tengu as any evil magic user can become as dangerous as he is.[81] Nanase asked him why he keeps Noriko's monster hunting career secret from Tedd, and Edward at first refused to answer, but only said that it's important to keep it secret, and then implied that Tedd would become mute again if he learned the truth about his mother.[82]

Squirrel Prophet (prologue)[]

On January 2 Edward argued with Tedd whether magic should be made public; Edward again argued that it would reward evil people dangerous spells.[83]

Sister 3[]

When Nanase asked him if Susan and Diane are related, Edward told her that the hospital records of Susan's birth show that they are not twins and Susan is not adopted,[84] but noted that they might be half-sisters because Susan's father is known to have cheated on her mother.[85] Nanase asked if they could do anything to protect Diane from vampires as they might attack her because of her magic affinity for vampire hunting and Edward answered that Diane would be in less danger than most people since most vampires will avoid her because they can't sense that she is not yet dangerous to them.[86]

Later that day (a Sunday in January) Edward, Elliot, Tedd, Nanase, Grace and Ellen met to discuss the incident where Elliot was outed as Cheerleadra. Edward though that most people wouldn't believe that Elliot is Cheerleadra as he had been seen transforming from a female form into Cheerleadra and Edward thought that people wouldn't want to believe that Cheerleadra is a man.[87] He also planned a fake Cheerleadra sighting while Elliot would be at school in order to discredit the suspicions.[88] Then they discussed the fact that an immortal (Voltaire) had tried to kill Elliot. Edward thought it was the same immortal who made Dex summon the fire monsters and the dragon and that those were also attempts to kill Elliot.[89][90] The immortal showed up to confirm his involvement with Dex[91] Edward asked the immortal to vow to leave Elliot alone. The immortal refused to make such a vow but vowed not to try to kill Elliot instead.[92] Edward made the immortal redo the vow to close a loophole.[93] After the immortal left, Edward explained how vows work.[94]

The next day Grace asked Edward if vampires are redeemable and Edward explained that they are not.[95]

Balance, parts 3 and 8 (flashbacks)[]

Before Tedd's meeting with Arthur about the lab that Tedd had been offered, Edward mentioned the possibility that Tedd might want to turn down the offer.[96] He also told Tedd that Arthur believes that the needs of the many requires sacrificing the needs of the few and calls himself a monster in service of the greater good.[97] During the meeting Edward was called away because of a being referred to as a flying turtle shell.[98]

Thus he went to meet the turtle shell[99] (whom Edward calls Steve[100]). Steve told Edward that the magic energy clog would go away naturally[101] and that the center of the flow of magic would move to Moperville University.[102]

Title Pending (revealed in Balance, part 9)[]

In the weekend two weeks after Voltaire showed up, when Tedd asked his father for permission to throw a party on the following Saturday (three weeks after Voltaire showed up) to introduce Ashley to his friends, Edward decided to spend the weekend of the party at Lavender's house.[103] While staying with Lavender, Edward impulsively proposed to her and they decided that she would move in with him so that Tedd and Grace would get to know Lavender as family before moving to college and because he would feel lonely after Tedd and Grace moved.[104] After the party Tedd told his father that he had learned from a magic mirror that Noriko is scarred and conceals her scars with magic, which was news to Edward.[105]

Balance (present)[]

On the morning after the emissary of magic visited Grace's dreams to explain the second magic change (Wednesday after the party), Edward saw Grace's note about the dream.[106] He asked her to explain it in detail before she went to school since he would report it as his own dream[107] in order to protect Grace from the attention of Arthur and other powerful government employees.[108] The emissary's claim that uryuoms are not from space was news to him.[109]

Edward and Elliot met on the next day (a Thursday) to plan Elliot's meeting with the griffins Tara and Andrea on the following Saturday. He wanted to go to the meeting himself and he didn't want Nanase to go with him.[110][111] He mentioned that he has new information about the magic energy clog but refused to tell Elliot and Tedd more before the meeting because he thought Elliot might try to meet the griffins alone.[112] Grace wanted to go but Edward was opposed to anyone of the younger generation accompanying him to the meeting (except Elliot, as the griffins were expecting him).[113] Grace insisted on going with them and said she would follow them even if they tried to leave her behind.[114] Edward conceded and called Grace "as stubborn as any other woman in this family"[115]

The morning before the meeting with the griffins, Edward talked on the phone with Lavender, who asked Edward when he was going to tell Tedd and Grace that she would move in with them. Edward explained that he hadn't told them because the past week would have been bad timing. Edward promised to tell Tedd the next day.[116]

Before Edward, Elliot and Grace went to meet the griffins, Edward told Elliot to flee, send a message to Arthur and leave the fighting to him should the meeting go badly.[117] While they were waiting for the griffins, they were attacked by the griffin Liam, who was under mind control complelling him to attack royalty.[118] Edward cast his barrier spell.[119] When the attacker slammed into the barrier, Edward was blasted away[120] because he had cast it incorrectly.[121] He reflexively cast a spell that made him limp to protect him and the spell accidentally made him seemingly uncounscious for the rest of the fight.[122] When the attacker flew towards him Grace carried Edward away[123] and Elliot defeated the attacker.[124][125]

When Liam woke up, he was no longer under mind control.[126] Then another griffin, Dwight, arrived,[127] followed by Tara and Andrea[128] and Liam's uryuom assistant Virginia. Dwight threatened Virginia with a fireball for holding Elliot's phone[129] Edward took away Dwight's fireball[130] and exinguished it and explained to the griffins and Virginia what the phone is.[131] Dwight explained why uryuoms are forbidden from handling technology in their world[132][133] and Liam denounced the prejudice and discimination against uryuoms.[134] After Liam, Dwight and Virginia left,[135] Edward talked with Tara and Andrea about the small chances of political reform in the griffins' world.[136]

Then Edward told Andrea and Tara that the immortal Pandora caused the clog[137] and what Steve had told him about the energy clog.[100] Andrea said that the flow of magic wasn't moving on the griffins' side and Edward suggested that geographic locations are independent on the two sides.[138] Then Andrea and Edward decided to meet again later.[139] Edward also asked the griffins about royal auras.[140] Then Edward asked the griffins about their healing magic and cut a wound in his palm to let them demonstrate it.[141] After Tara healed Edward, she slapped him[142] and told him that he must care about his own well-being. She also taught him another healing spell (which didn't need an injury to demonstrate).[143]

After the griffins had left, Edward said that his plan to deal with threats on his own while Elliot and Grace would flee was a bad plan and that he should have let Grace and Elliot help.[144] Edward took Elliot to his home in order to let Tedd make a wand to for Elliot to change his hair color to normal (it was blond because of magic burnout) and to heal Elliot's injured hands.[145] When Grace complained that she didn't get to talk to Virginia more and about her lack of uryuom friends, Edward told her, Tedd and Elliot that he has an uryuom girlfriend, Lavender, who would move in with them as they are engaged.[146] Elliot noted that it would have been harder for Lavender, Tedd and Grace to get to know each other as a family if they waited until Tedd and Grace moved to the Moperville University dorms, and Edward explained that he had proposed to Lavender partly for that reason.[104] When Edward healed Elliot,[147] Elliot unexpectedly got him magic back.[148] In Edward's report to Arthur about the meeting with the griffins, he tried to minimize Grace's power to protect her from Arthur's attention.[149]

Our Future[]

Later Susan told Edward that she thought the immortals had changed their law[150] as she had seen internet video comments about change that she believed to be by Zeus, an immortal who had vowed to be her ally.[151] Edward had heard about observations of immortals that can be explained by the changed law. He was impressed by Susan figuring out the message.[152] He asked her how she figured it out and when she explained, he was even more impressed.[153] Edward took Susan's conclusions seriously and decided to report them to Arthur even thought he expected Arthur to want to recruit Susan.[154]

Layers[]

Edward couldn't introduce Lavender to Tedd and Grace for a few months after he told them about her, as he was busy with his work because of the magic change.[155] Sometime in spring, however, the four of them went to a restaurant together for dinner.[156][157]

On the Friday Lavender was going to meet Tedd and Grace, she told Edward that she was grateful for what Tedd had done for the uryuoms.[158] Edward thought she should she should keep Tedd's importance to the uryuoms secret, both the fact that uryuoms are using clone forms designed by Tedd and the fact that an immortal had told the uryuoms about Tedd's involvement with the magic change that made uryuoms able to use magic, but Lavender argued that they couldn't keep it secret from Tedd, as Tedd would see that she was using a clone form.[159] Thus Edward presumably asked his superiors for permission to tell Tedd about the clone form program, and got permission.[160]

When Edward and Lavender met Tedd and Grace outside the restaurant, Lavender told Tedd about uryuom projections; this discussion of secrets in public made Edward uncomfortable and he hoped that anyone who overheard them would think it was about video games or novels.[161] When Lavender confirmed that she was using a clone form, Edward told Tedd that the government had given most uryuoms in America clone forms based on Tedd's work, which made Tedd happy.[162] Tedd noted that this must be why Edward was so supportive of his work on the clone forms, which made Edward sad.[160] Edward considered telling Tedd why he was previously forbidden from telling him, but decided that Tedd might be happier not knowing.[25]

The following night Tedd stayed up late watching videos about quantum physics and Edward gave her a piece of paper with information about uryuom projections in the hope that it would be better for Tedd's sleep than letting her speculate.[163]

Edward was still unsure whether to tell Tedd that his boss almost took the transformation gun away from him and that he had to keep the plan to give clone forms to the uryuoms secret as part of the deal to let Tedd keep it, and he talked about it with Lavender.[164]

On the Monday after Tedd met Lavender, Tedd showed Edward a magic experiment[165] where he tried to see Elliot's default form while Elliot was transformed[166] in order to test hos hypothesis that uryuom projections and several other magic phemonena involve layers of reality.[167] When Tedd powered up for the experiment, his eyes became black like Lord Tedd's eyes.[168] Then Tedd saw something that caused him to shut his eyes.[169] Edward reassured Tedd that he didn't have to prove himself and told him that he kept the plan to give uryuoms clone forms secret as part of the deal to let Tedd keep the transformation gun.[170] When he explained that he had kept that deal secret because he was worried how Tedd would react, Tedd said that he should have told him and that he was happy to know what his father had done for him.[171]

Might be noble[]

Edward is of what the Other half of the Main Universe consider royal blood.[172] Possibly for that reason, Edward was twice addressed as "sir".[8][173] While "sir" might not necessary be a noble title, he may actually be noble.

Contacts with aliens[]

Mr. Verres is either friends with or the government contact of the Uryuoms William and Gillian; it is through his contact with them that Tedd got the Transformation Gun. William and Gillian needed someone to program it, but finding someone trustworthy enough to do it was hard.[174]

When Tedd volunteered, in a way contrasting with his usual shyness in that time, Mr. Verres didn't take it seriously at first, but then admitted Tedd might be able to do it and thought about how he rarely speaks ... he said that William and Gillian should decide to give Tedd a chance, but it seems that it was him who needed convincing.

Relationships[]

The secret circle[]

While Mr. Verres is occasionally annoyed or frustrated by the antics of the main group, he has, at this point, accepted that they are involved in the paranormal events surrounding Moperville. He treats the main group as a "secret circle" and he's willing to share information with them on a need to know basis, but warns them to keep the circle at eight.[175]

Raven and Noriko[]

Noriko Verres is Tedd's mother and presumably Edward's ex-wife. We don't know much details about how the divorce happened, but it seems Adrian Raven was involved. He taught both Edward and Noriko in high school,[176] remained friends with them after they graduated and encouraged them in their careers (presumably monster hunting[177]). He believes to be the reason Noriko decided to pursue her career and abandon her family, although the fact that Tedd didn't have magic powers might have influenced that as well.[178]

The current relationship between Edward and Raven is still complicated.[179] They don't speak much and might have hard time thinking logically when they do.

Meanwhile, Noriko is supposed to be in Europe, or at least Tedd was told so,[180] and doesn't visit even on holidays.[181] She probably also doesn't call, at least not often.

Tedd[]

The truth about Noriko[]

Edward is actively hiding the truth about Noriko - both the bits we know and the more personal parts - from his son, to the point of persuading his son's friends, such as Nanase, to cover it.[182]

He claims that it's important for Tedd's psychological health, to the point of him possibly withdrawing as much as he did before the TF Gun, when Nanase thought he was mute.[182] He was successful in convincing Ellen[183] but Nanase wanted to ask for more explanation.[184]

Gender identity[]

Edward supports his son's interest in transformation, but only because he sees how important it is for him. He was afraid of it from the start[185] and he doesn't like his son being a girl so often.[186]

He doesn't get Tedd's gender fluidity. While he tries to be tolerant, not getting it makes him concerned, and this concern creates friction between them, making Tedd feel unaccepted and defiant / sad.[187]

Note that it's possible that after encouragement from Pandora,[188] Tedd stopped caring so much about his dad's opinion.[189]

Later Edward became more accepting of Tedd transforming into feminine forms,[190] possibly due to talking about it with Lavender.[191]

Lavender[]

Lavender works as Edward's personal assistant at his office.[20] She stayed with him after he was reassigned to paranormal diplomacy.[192] She had a crush on him[192] and eventually they started dating.[103] They are engaged and plan to move together.[146]
