El Goonish Shive Timeline

This timeline is based on information provided by El Goonish Shive's author, Dan Shive, and is intended to make it easier to get a sense of how both the plot and the characters have progressed since the comic started. On February 2, 2010, Shive acknowledged the timeline in part 3 of the fourth in-comic Q&A session. In the commentary, he declared that, short of finding a flaw somewhere, he considers it canon. At that time, the page looked like this, and subsequent edits have not necessarily been vetted accordingly.

By looking at the days given with the dates, one can conclude that the comic takes place in 2013 (moving into 2014 in more recent story arcs), as this is the only year with the right approximate technology where, for instance, May 24th and March 29th are Fridays. 2002 has the correct day-date pairings, but the technology used in the comic isn't consistent with technology available at the time; this being a fictional universe, of course, it cannot be ruled out. 2019 also fits with the established days, but that would make the stories taking place from Family Tree onward take place in 2020. Since 2020 is a leap year, it will not have the same match ups of day-of-the-month/day-of-the-week from Saturday, February 29 onward. The only thing Dan himself will admit about which year the comic takes place in is that it is in the 21st century.

Later that week (possibly January 10)	Friday	Squirrel Prophet: Grace meets a magic emissary in her dreams, & at school, senses magic marks on Rhoda & Justin. That night, Justin holds a card tournament at the comic store. Tedd, Sarah, George, Tensaided, Larry & Rich all compete, plus newcomers Luke & Sam. Pandora shadows Sarah & Tedd in spirit form. Tedd gets a mark that allows gender swapping. Luke uses a mark that lets him read power levels, & is overwhelmed by Tedd's. Tedd's ability to intuitively understand magic is revealed. Sarah bonds with Sam, & they set up a "date" for next Friday. Justin talks magic with Luke & asks him out. Pandora, still invisible, reveals having awakened Justin. The following day (possibly January 11)	Saturday	Playing With Dolls: At Tedd's lab, Susan & Nanase create an alternate Nase for Susan, as well as a Tedd doll for Nanase. Tedd reveals that there's been nudity for himself, Sarah & Grace during tests with size & height changing. He also brings up the night before. Squirrel Prophet & Question Mark: During her daily check, Sarah finds a magic mark on her back & tries to figure out what spells she has. She finds out by accident that she can simulate time stops. So A Date At The Mall: Elliot & Ashley go on their first date at the mall. Diane, Ellen & Nanase visit Charlotte to solve another mystery. After encountering a griffin, Tara, & several immortals, including Voltaire, Ashley, Elliot, & Tara meet Nanase, Ellen, Charlotte & Diane in a parking lot some ways away. Tara reveals she's looking for her wife. After a vampire tries to kill Diane over her hunter potential, Tara & her wife, Andrea, are reunited. They state that they're from the other half of the main universe, & that magic isn't flowing back there from Moperville when it should. Elliot accepts his superhero form, likely making his energy build-ups stop.
