"Mmm...So cute...I will call him Tedd-chan"
—Nioi after seeing Tedd

Nioi (匂い?) is a voluntary servant[2] of Lord Tedd, who came to the main EGS universe during Painted Black to find out if Dr. Sciuridae was alive here. In the process, she gave Ellen the infamous "nose-beep" which started her Second Life, in order to age her soul to an age that would match that of her body.

History[]

When Nioi handled the Dewitchery Diamond she accidentally created her duplicate Kaoli.[3]

Nioi went to the Main Universe to seek out Dr. Sciuridae in order to find out how to defeat General Shade Tail as she was concened that he was corrupting Lord Tedd.[4] She used her crystal ball to watch the Tedd from our dimension, whom she finds cute and calls Tedd-chan,[5] and heard Sarah address Grace as "Ms. Scuiridae".[6]

She followed Grace to the Nest and eavesdropped Dr. Sciuridae when he told Grace about the history of Project Lycanthrope.[7] Thus she learned that Grace is a part-lespuko seyunolu.[8] She saved Grace with her shield when Damien blew himself up.[9] She told Grace that the gang has misconceptions about Lord Tedd.[2] When she returned Grace to her friends[10] Nioi told Ellen that she knew about the Dewitchery diamond[11] and that her soul needed to be aged with childhood memories and gave her a magical nose beep.[12]

As a result of the nose beep Ellen experinced memories from another universe in her dreams.[13] At the end of the dreams Nioi gave her a message about why she did it, which also mentioned that she wanted Kaoli to know someone else with memories from that universe.[14]

Species[]

Given that Nioi's duplicate Kaoli appears in the Second Life universe and there are other animal-like humanoids in that universe that are implied to be seyunolu, it stands to reason that since Kaoli (and by extension Nioi) lacks antennae, she is most likely a roaisol seyunolu. Nioi's ability to use magic to alter her skin color and change her body to look younger are likely independent of her species and do not necessarily imply that she is a different species from the other animal-like humanoids seen in the Second Life universe. It is more likely that Nioi acquired magic from an immortal than the alternate hypothesis that she is a different species altogether and possess magic naturally.

Abilities[]

Magic[]

  • Magical Shield Nioi's spherical shield was powerful enough to stop Damien's final attack without incurring damage to herself or Grace.[15]
  • Flight
  • Nose Beep Nioi has the ability to transfer memories and enable person's soul to experience the life of one of their dimensional counterparts in their dreams as a way of aging their soul. She does it by beeping a person's nose.[16]
  • Transformation Nioi can at least change color of her skin and make herself younger.[3]

Magical Equipment[]

Nioi appears to specialize in magic items, and has a glass orb capable of acting as a crystal ball[17] to see things remotely within the same dimension and allowing her to travel through dimensions. Note that there are likely some limits to that functionality, considering she resorted to more mundane ways of observing Damien.[7]

Parallels and possible alternates[]

As an inhabitant of an alternate universe, Nioi may be an alternate version of a character from the Main Universe (as Lord Tedd is the alternate of Tedd, and General Shade Tail is the alternate of Grace, or who Grace might have been without Dr Sciuridae's intervention). Characters with suggestive similarities include:

The idea that Nioi is a main character alternate does not have explicit support in-comic. Nioi's origin may be entirely different, and such parallels may be down to literary effect or just coincidence.

Trivia[]

  • Her name is Japanese for "scent".
    • Not to be confused with the identically pronounced 臭い, which is Japanese for stench.
  • The symbol on her collar is a stylized letter T
