Pandoras Box [sic] is the nineteenth storyline group in the main canon of EGS. It opened March 10, 2014 and ended Jul 1st 2016. With the exception of first storyline chapter, its canonical storylines cover just two days - Friday and Saturday. Despite this short in-universe time span, the storyline group is currently (up to at least Balance) the longest in the comic, clocking in at 393 pages. It includes the following storylines:

  • Squirrel Prophet (prologue): The emissary of Magic shows up in Grace's dream to tell her about the possibility of magic change
  • Squirrel Prophet (core): Sarah and Tedd go to a Magickal Gatherings tournament at Salty Crackers Comics; we especially follow Sarah's games, where she is primarily interested in roleplaying the theme of her deck. Luke is sent there on a mission to find magic users by his friends. Grace remembers that she learned in her dreams that an immortal (Pandora) has given multiple people magic marks. Tedd learns that he is genderfluid, is marked by Pandora with a spell for sex changing, and learns about his rare magic insight. Justin and Luke are attracted to each other but initially assume each other to be straight. Sarah meets Sam, who shares her interest in roleplaying, and they decide to go on a maybe-date together. Justin and Luke talk about magic and decide to go on a date.
  • So A Date At The Mall: Elliot and Ashley go on their first date. Meanwhile Charlotte, Ellen, Nanase and Diane investigate two griffins (Tara and Andrea) who have been seen in Moperville. The immortal Voltaire manipulates Tara into attacking Elliot by accusing him of doing something to her wife, Andrea, but after Ashley offers to help the griffin find her wife (after Ellen has told Ashley about her group's investigation) Elliot convinces Tara that the immortal is lying. Tara, Elliot, Ashley, Charlotte, Nanase, Diane and Ellen meet to plan the search for Andrea. Diane and Charlotte are attacked by a vampire because of Diane's Magic affinity for vampire hunting and saved by Andrea and Tara. Andrea, Tara, Elliot and Nanase meet to exchange relevant information. The fact that Diane has the same magic affinity as Susan makes Nanase determined to help them meet since she thinks they are twins.
  • Question Mark: After Sarah has found a magic mark on herself, she unsuccessfully tries to figure out what her new spell is and then accidentally casts her new spell, which is a simulated time stop spell. Later Pandora visits Sarah to talk about the spell she has given her.
  • Q&A 7: Q&A session hosted by Amanda and Lisa.

Squirrel Prophet (prologue)[]

On January 2 Tedd argued with his father about making magic public. Tedd's father said that it would be dangerous because magic gives evil people dangerous spells.[1] Tedd argued that the public could be given wands of protective magic but his father pointed out that it can help people gain magic of their own and there would be a black market of wands.[2]

On a later night (probably the night before Friday after Elliot met Ashley) Grace dreamed about a history lesson at school where she said "Every beloved historical figure was horrible in some way". The teacher (not Adrian Raven) scolded her for reading about history on the internet.[3] The dream changed to Grace having forgotten to wear clothes,[3] which caused the other students to laugh at her and the teacher to say that she doesn't belong anywhere.[4] Grace ran out of the classroom.[5]

Outside she met a stranger who mentioned the he had seen Grace having the same dream before.[5] The teacher followed Grace and tried to make the stranger leave. The stranger turned the teacher into Rhoda as a fox-girl[6] and modified the dream so that Grace wore clothes again. He said that he is a wizard and had an important message that he was trying to give for the third time.[7] He said that he was an emissary from magic itself[8], with a warning about the possibility that the magic system might radically change.[9] When Grace pointed out that it is hard to remember dreams she remembered the emissary visiting her dreams before.[10] The emissary tried to make Grace remember the dream using associations.[11] She was woken by an alarm clock and wrote her dream journal. She, again, apparently didn't remember anything important.[12]

SP - Part 2[]

This chapter is very long, so this article divides it into subchapters.

The second part started with images of magic marks: Justin's flame on his back, Rhoda's mark on her back, Dex's fairy on his chest, and five previously unknown marks.[13]

Squirrel Prophet (Grace at school)[]

On the Friday of the week Elliot asked Ashley out (in the storyline Identity, Ellen was driving Grace to school and talked about Elliot having a girlfriend. Grace thought it was too soon and Ellen wasn't bothered but noted that Elliot was becoming less of a stick in the mud.[14] They met Diane in school and she overheard it, which made her angry.[15] After Ellen told her how Elliot met Ashley, Diane declared that she had to seduce him and then denied that she was interested in him.[16] They also met Rhoda, and Grace had a weird feeling about Rhoda's back almost reminding her of something...[17][18] and a bit later, the same feeling about Justin's back.[19] Justin talked to Grace about how Tedd and Sarah were going to play in a card game tournament that afternoon and Grace told Justin that he might be shocked by Tedd. Justin asked if Tedd was going to be a girl and Grace said that it wouldn't exactly be that.[20]

Squirrel Prophet (arrival at the comic shop)[]

After school, the story moved to Salty Crackers Comics. Justin and George were already there. Justin asked George for help deciding what movies to play on the TV but George refused to help him since he wasn't working and was only interested in playing a Pokemon game.[21] Then Sarah, Grace and Tedd arrived... and Tedd had shorter and—more importantly—pink hair.[22] Tedd explained that he was owning his girly looks rather than hiding it with long hair. Sarah commented that Tedd was feeling rebellious.[23] Sarah said that she would prefer Tedd's hair ruffled. They also talked about Tedd using magic to color his hair.[24] Grace asked Justin what Tedd cutting his hair and making it pink meant[25] George made seemingly insightful comments on Tedd's psychological state and mentioned going through a similar phase, but denied ever having pink hair.[26]

The reason they came was a sealed tournament in Magickal Gatherings, the EGS universe equivalent of the Magic: The Gathering card game. There was a new expansion, featuring vampires and werewolves,[27] and Sarah wanted to build a fun theme deck. Mr. Tensaided and others objected that she should play to win[28] and Larry and Rich used Sarah's interest in roleplaying as an excuse to complain about fake geek girls. On the other hand, they both took an interest in the (properly geeky) "pink-haired chick", aka Tedd.[29] Grace wondered what she was feeling about Justin's and Rhoda's backs.[30]

Squirrel Prophet (Luke's arrival)[]

A new guy, Luke, showed up and asked Justin about his fight with Dex's fire summon[30][31] (in the storyline New And Old Flames) He used some sort of aura sight to confirm that Justin had a magical mark, and then noticed that Grace also had power.[31] He fled quickly and Justin thought he was attracted to Grace.[32] He reported by phone that Grace had a different kind of power than most of those he knew; he compared her to a "Shadow Guy" (Noah) with prehensile tendrils coming out of his head.[33] Luke was ordered by his friend on the phone to return and participate in the tournament as a cover for further investigations,[34] which he did.[35] Grace asked him if she scared her. Luke said that he was nervous because of his bad experience from another comic shop[36]

Squirrel Prophet (before the card game tournament)[]

Then several card game players arrived at the last second.[37] Sarah talked to Tedd about feeling nervous about losing the game but denied that she felt nervous.[38] Justin read the tournament rules[39] and Grace said that she couldn't do that since she is too shy to speak in public.[40]

Sarah drew an overpowered rare card that just happened to be a vampire, O.P. Aludrakrala.[41] In Sarah's imagination a vampire-Sarah showed up to persuade her to make a vampire deck.[42] Vampire-Sarah argued that she could use vampires to show Tensaided that she could win. Sarah objected that she doesn't like vampires that much because they are generally evil.[43] A cute werewolf-Sarah showed up to argue that Sarah shouldn't let Tensaided make her play to win instead of roleplaying.[44] Vampire-Sarah objected that she shouldn't avoid building a vampire deck because it would be what Tensaided wanted either and that she would want to win if she could.[45] Sarah decided to use both vampires and werewolves and she came up with a story about a group of redeemed vampires working with a group of werewolves to defend nature.[46]. Pandora was watching her from the spirit plane.[47]

Squirrel Prophet (card game tournament, round one)[]

In the first round, Tedd encountered Larry, who asked about his age, which made Tedd assume that he is gay.[48] Tedd thought to himself that he shouldn't think judge him for that.[49] During the game Larry hit on Tedd—rather unsubtly, and clearly unable to take a hint.[50] Luke met Rich, who derided Luke's playing as "gay", which angered him enough that he abandoned the original plan of losing quickly—in order to spend the time getting to know Justin and Grace better—and instead trounced him soundly.[51] Sarah went up against George, who won the first game by summoning an invincible dragon.[52] He gave her useful enough advice between the games (the rounds were best two out of three)[53] that she won one.[54]

When Tedd complained to Grace about Larry, she told him that Larry is straight[55] and that many men act that way to women, which made Tedd want to bring back the hammers.[56] While Tedd and Grace talked about how to deal with Larry, an invisible Pandora put her arms on Tedd's shoulders.[57]

Squirrel Prophet (card game tournament, round two)[]

When Larry and Rich talked about the pink-haired girl (Tedd) after the first round they realized that they didn't know her name[58] and they couldn't read it on the list of pairings since it was already replaced with that for the second round.[59] As Tedd faced Sam, Rich and Larry concluded from the list of pairings that the pink-paired girl had one of those names and assumed that "Sam" is short for "Samantha".[60]

Luke, who had gotten a bye,[59] hesitated before deciding to talk to Justin, as he was supposed to get to know him and Grace but was scared of Grace.[61] He awkwardly started a conversation with Justin,[62] who invited him to sit beside himself. Justin noticed Luke's nervousness and asked if it was the other comic shop's fault.[63] Luke thought of how people at the other comic shop would call everything they disliked "gay" so he decided to talk about something else and asked if Justin wanted to talk about Star Wars or Star Trek instead. Justin said that the Star Wars prequels are a good conversation topic.[64] Thus they geeked out over Star Wars.[65][66]

Sarah played against Mr. Tensaided.[67] Thanks to George's advice[68][69] she actually managed to win.[70] Tensaided loudly declared that she had geek cred and gave her a pair of nerd costume glasses.[71]

After Tedd won the round Sam commented on his name and suggested Tess as a female semi-equivalent, "just in case it does matter".[72] A confused Tedd talked it over with Grace, who explained the concept of transgender to him. Tedd was surprised[73] as he thought "transgender" only refers to transformation. Grace then explained that Tedd is gender fluid, which made Tedd happy that there is a name for it.[74] That made him want to be a girl when he told Sarah that he had made a personal discovery.[75] Tedd later asked Grace why she knew what transgender means and she didn't tell him that she was once puzzled that Sam, to Grace apparently a woman, had a beard.[76]

Both Sarah and Grace were happy to notice the chemistry between Justin and Luke;[77] George, however, was less than enthused.[66] Luke, mistaking the cause for his grumpiness, decided to check out his aura "just in case" and got blinded[78]—due to Tedd, who happened to stand right beside George at the time, a still invisible Pandora explained.[79]

Squirrel Prophet (card game tournament, round three)[]

Before the third round, Rich and Larry learned that Rich was paired with Tedd. When the man they assumed to be Tedd told them that he is named Sam they were shocked that the one they saw as a woman was named Tedd[80] and uncertain whether to see Tedd as a hot girl they should hit on or a deceitful guy trying to trick them. Larry pointed out that Tedd can be a woman's name so when Rich sat down for the game he asked Tedd about the etymology of his name.[81] It didn't help that Tedd suddenly did turn into a girl,[82] due to an unconscious use of a magic mark Pandora had placed on him, which surprised Pandora. Tedd was happy about being a girl in public.[83] Since Tedd was creeped out by Rich she had mixed feelings about how feminine to act.[84]

Sarah faced Larry, who tried the same routine on her as he had on Tedd in round one, but she gave him a stern talking-to, trying to make him change his ways.[85][86] Larry couldn't believe that women wouldn't want men to hit on them[87] and called her a lesbian. She then concentrated on the game[88] and eventually won—as did Tedd,[89] though luckily quicker. Tedd fled from the table as fast as she could.[90]

Grace talked to Justin. When he asked her if she was bored she told him that she would play with change blindness ... and also showed him how she plays with it by changing breast size and height, which Justin totally overlooked.[91] Grace talked about Luke being attracted to someone and Justin said that she shouldn't make fun of Luke for being attracted to her since she is "practically married" to Tedd.[92] Grace told Justin that Luke was attracted to him but Justin at first didn't believe that since most people are supposed to be straight.[93] When Grace asked Justin what Luke thought about the "slave Leia" outfit from Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, Justin started believing that Luke might be gay as Luke disliked that outfit.[94] As he was afraid of Luke reacting badly to him asking him out, he decided to wear an earring as a secret gay signal.[95] When Justin wore that earring he couldn't resist the temptation to move his head to attract Luke's attention to it.[96] When Tedd turned in her results she wanted Justin to notice her transformation and Justin wanted Tedd to notice the earring but neither did.[97]

Dex showed up and talked with Grace, who was manning the counter. He told her that Greg had a new girlfriend. She got the same feeling from him as from Rhoda and Justin earlier.[98] This time, it triggered memories of her dream[99] and since she knew he had a magic mark she realized that it actually might point to something real. She thought about the mark that Justin was supposed to have and realized that he might not know about it if he had one.[100] Then she remembered that the dream suggested that the immortal who appeared on the news (Pandora) had marked those who had appeared in her dream.[101]

Squirrel Prophet (Tedd's magic mark)[]

Thus, when Grace learned that Tedd had changed sex without meaning to, she immediately thought of magical marks[102] and told Tedd about her dreams.[103] They slipped away to the back room to do a thorough search.[104] Eventually she found one on Tedd's head, under the hair.[105] Tedd decided to do some experiments to find out if it really did what they thought it would.[106] Tedd managed to confirm had she had a transformation spell by turning more girly.[107] Grace persuaded her to change back to avoid someone noticing the transformation.[108] Tedd told Grace that she had disenchanted herself before and didn't know why. After disenchanting herself Tedd was still female since that transformation was not an enchantment but permanent.[109] Tedd sent Grace out to do more experimentation alone[110] and during that experiment (as well as returning to male form)[111] Tedd learned more about not only his new spell but also the "intuition" for magic he had thought he'd developed through extensive testing.[112]

After Sarah defeated Larry,[113] Tensaided showed him a review show video with Sarah to prove her geek cred and chastised him for hitting on her.[114] Larry told Rich that he doubted their views on women but Rich defended those views.[115]

When Tedd told Sarah and Grace[116] (who of course could not see magic the way Tedd could) he learned that this intuition was actually a rare ability to see and understand spells and enchantments.[117] Grace suggested that he is a wizard.[118] When they talked about whether Tedd is a wizard,[119] George overheard their discussion and asked about it, and Sarah tried rather unsuccessfully to convince him they were talking about the card game.[120] George mentioned Tedd's hair.[121]

Squirrel Prophet (more Luke)[]

Luke won his game despite being so distracted that he didn't notice it. He was attracted to Justin but thought him obviously straight.[122] When he turned in his game results he fantasized about telling Justin that he though Justin had a magic mark to look for it.[123] He didn't notice Justin's earring, which annoyed Justin.[124][125]

Sarah suggested that Tedd should try to use this ability to verify whether Justin had a mark, as Grace's dream said he did. When Tedd tried it, by chance he happened to do this at the same time as Luke, standing close to the line of sight, used his ability on George to see if it was he who was the source of the blinding flash earlier.[126] Thus, while Tedd couldn't tell if Justin had a mark, he became "one hundred percent certain that guy can".[127] Sarah and Grace emphasized that Luke was not necessarily a bad guy since they were hoping for his relationship with Justin.[128] Sarah suggested that they ask Luke what he knew.[129] When the pairings of the final round were announced, they learned that Tedd would meet Luke.[130]

Luke, Rich and Larry saw Tedd and Grace kissing.[131] Rich and Larry argued about Tedd's gender.[132] They realized that Tedd had transformed and concluded that Tedd was an alien but Larry would still want to date him. Luke overheard their conversation[133] and thought of the scary possibility that Tedd and Grace are both aliens and that it explained what he saw.[134]

SP - Final Battle[]

This chapter is long, so this article divides it into subchapters.

Squirrel Prophet (card game tournament, round four)[]

In the fourth and last round of the Magickal Gatherings tournament Luke played against Tedd[135] and they annoyed each other with their identical defensive playstyles.[136][137][138] They didn't realize that they used the same tactics until they were playing on overtime.[139] Their game ended with a draw.[140] Rich played against Larry and Rich was disgusted that Larry would date a sex-shifter since he considered that too gay. Larry asked him why he had a problem with gays.[141] At the end of the tournament George ended in second place, Tedd and Luke tied for third and Sarah in fourth place.[142]

Sarah played against Sam, who went along with her story about defending a forest by saying that her vampires were the real threat to the forest.[143] They argued whether vampires are redeemable and Sarah almost forgot that they were playing a game.[144] When Sam summoned the powerful angel card Van Angelsting[145] their tactical positions became such that the first player to attack would have a disadvantage so they summoned more monsters instead.[146] Sam said that Sarah would lose by running out of cards first if they continued like that but Sarah had more cards than the minimum deck size since she couldn't decide what cards not to use.[147] Sam wanted to go out in a blaze of glory but Sarah offered a draw.[148] Sam, however, insisted on conceding.[149]

Grace debated whether to tell Justin what Tedd had learned about magic in general and Luke in particular.[150] She sent a telekinetically guided paper airplane with a message to Justin[151] which used Star Wars references to tell him about Tedd sensing Luke's magic-detecting ability.[152] Justin concluded that Luke went to the comic shop to learn about magic since Justin had fought alongside Cheerleadra.[153] Larry asked Justin what he thought about saying "that's gay" about things one dislikes[154] and Justin explained to him why that use of the word is offensive.[155] Luke overheard them mention that Justin is gay.[155] When Justin told Grace that he wanted to talk to Luke alone[156] she was worried if it was a good idea[157] and he agreed to keep some secrets from Luke.[158]

After Sarah and Sam finished playing the card game they got along well and Sarah suggested that they meet again.[159] Sam was surprised that she asked him to something that sounded like a date but they decided to do so.[160] Larry apologized to Sarah and Tedd for hitting on them.[161] After Larry learned that Sarah and Sam had a maybe-date[162] he had an internal debate on whether Sarah was a hypocrite but concluded that the date went to the better man.[163]

Squirrel Prophet (before Justin's final conversation with Luke)[]

Grace threw paper airplanes at Tedd and Sarah[164] to tell them about Justin's plans and they were worried too.[165] Justin told Luke that he wanted to talk to him after the shop closed[166] and what he had deduced about Luke.[167] Grace, Tedd and Sarah were startled by George and he asked them why they were so jumpy.[168] George frowned when he mentioned Justin and Luke[169] and Sarah concluded that George was attracted to Justin.[170] When Justin told Grace, Tedd and Sarah to leave to let him talk to Justin they decided to wait at a nearby fast food place.[170] After leaving the comic shop Grace realized that she had forgotten to ask if he had a magic mark.[171]

Squirrel Prophet (Justin's final conversation with Luke)[]

When Justin and Luke were alone in the shop Luke asked Justin about his magic mark and Justin thought he didn't have one.[172] Luke said that he can specifically detect magic marks and pointed out that Justin could fail to see a mark if it's on his back, like Luke's own mark. Justin took off his shirt to let Luke look for a magic mark on his back. Luke saw that Justin didn't have a magic mark on his back.[173] Pandora, who was hidden in the spiritual plane, commented that his mark was missing because she had already awakened him.[174] Luke asked where magic mark come from and Justin answered that they are given by beings called immortals.[175] Justin deduced that Luke knew at least two people with magic marks and one magic user without a mark[176] based on what Luke knew about magic.[177]

At the fast food restaurant Grace talked about telling Edward what they had learned and Tedd said that they shouldn't tell him anything, at least not before talking to Catalina, Rhoda and Justin about their magic marks, and especially not about his own magic mark.[178] When Grace asked why they should keep his magic mark secret from his father he didn't tell them that it's because his father had complained about Tedd being female too often.[179]

Luke confirmed that he knew people with magic marks. When Justin mentioned going to school Luke was surprised to that he was so young. Justin asked Luke out[180] and Luke said yes.[181]

When Justin met Tedd, Grace and Sarah, Grace and Sarah were tickling Tedd to make him smile.[182] Justin told them that talking to Luke made him realize how little he knew about magic marks. Tedd listed what he knew about magic marks and told Justin about his mark.[183] When Grace told Justin that Tedd's sex change spell undid his hair color enchantment,[184] Justin was surprised that he could have missed it. Sarah asked Justin about his relationship with Luke and Justin told the others that he had a date.[185] Tedd brought up the possibility that Luke was up to something but Justin shut down that discussion. Luke reported to his friend that he had a date with Justin and they mentioned that they were interested in Cheerleadra.[186] Because Justin didn't have a magic mark Grace concluded that her dreams were just dreams but Sarah said that Rhoda probably had a mark, which would explain how the boar became big.[187] Pandora concluded that someone had told Grace about the marks in her dreams.[188]

The next morning (Saturday) Sarah found a magic mark on her back.[189]

So A Date At The Mall (part 1)[]

The title of this storyline is a reference to NP story arc Not a Date at the Mall.

On the Saturday after Elliot met Ashley (in the storyline Identity) and the Magickal Gatherings tournament, Elliot and Ashley had their first date. Ashley asked Liz what to wear for the date and Liz said that Elliot wouldn't care as he is a dork.[190] Ashley then told Liz that the date would be at the mall since they couldn't decide anywhere else to go.[191] Liz told her to stay away from the book store.[192] Meanwhile, Elliot asked Ellen if she had any advice on dating based on dating Nanase and her memories from another universe.[193] Meanwhile, a cloaked figure (Dame Tara) watched Good Tom while he complained to his girlfriend about a movie and sensed a puppy in danger.[194]

When Elliot arrived at Ashley's house Ashley was proud of her cute dress but had to wear a winter coat.[195] When she told Elliot that the coat made her feel like a marshmallow, Elliot said that she was cute and Ashley said that he is too and then rambled about whether he would like being called cute.[196] On the way to the mall Elliot thought about Ashley's nervousness, whether he should be nervous and whether she is bisexual.[197]

Nanase and Ellen went to the date mentioned in Playing With Dolls. It was actually another "Charlotte's Angels" mystery solving, but both Nanase and Ellen considered it a date. While driving them Diane (who was with them partially to help them, but also because Nanase wanted to get to know Susan's possible sister and Ellen wanted to keep her away from Elliot[198]) objected to calling it a date and her wording made Nanase think of the themetune of Ducktales.[199] They went to Charlotte (and Rhea's) place[198] (Nanase and Ellen befriended Diane and Charlotte and started suspecting that Diane and Susan are twins in the storyline Family Tree).

When Elliot and Ashley arrived at the mall Ashley, who wanted Elliot to see her dress, left her coat in the car and Elliot did the same so they were cold when they left the car.[200] Though both were hungry they almost didn't go to the food court first because both thought the other wasn't hungry.[201] At the food court Elliot first suggested a Japanese restaurant and a Chinese restaurant, which made Ashley angry.[202] Ashley explained that her reaction was because of the assumptions people often made about her because she looked Asian.[203]

The mystery that Charlotte was investigating involved a "mysterious, cloaked figure" who asked young men for their names that Charlotte had concluded couldn't be human due to a picture of the figure that clearly demonstrated that it was not shaped like a human being.[204] Charlotte ordered the others to read articles about the cloaked figure, which Ellen found boring.[205] Ellen sent Elliot a text message about the cloaked figure.[206]

When they sat at a table Ashley offered to tell Elliot about herself. She told him that she didn't know where her family came from except that they weren't from Japan, that she liked anime, that she liked reading books and would get into a zone while reading and that she played ballet and danced soccer (she was embarrassed about misspeaking).[207] She told him that she didn't know what she would do for a living and Elliot realized that he didn't either.[208] Ashley also told Elliot that she once had an internet girlfriend[208] with whom she roleplayed about having transformation powers and that she liked transformation and was attracted to both men and women but she wouldn't call herself bisexual since she didn't like boiling anything down to labels.[209] She explained that labels can mean different things to different people[210] and that this can cause arguments between people who would otherwise agree.[211]

Ellen thought she couldn't help find a pattern in the obervations as the cloaked figure seemed better at hiding when she asked for names, as if there were two cloaked figures.[212] Charlotte, Nanase and Diane realized that this was a good hypothesis and decided to list the name-asking and non-name-asking observations separately.[213] When Charlotte had finished organizing the encounters she concluded that the less stealthy one had been seen in a smaller area than the stealthy one who asked for names and Diane and Nanase pointed out that the one who asked for names must be looking for someone.[214]

After they finished eating, Elliot suggested to Ashley that they go to the book store but Ashley, who remembered that she would lose track of time while reading, wanted to go somewhere else.[215] Elliot wondered why she wanted to avoid the book store and asked if she had an inconvenient magical ability involving books. Ashley said that she didn't and asked if magic abilities like that are common.[216] Meanwhile Tedd said "That's what happens when you conclusion jump" while watching an old sitcom. When Elliot hesitated Ashley suggested going to a cookie place.[217] Elliot considered what secrets he could tell Ashley and was impressed that she seemed to respect his unwillingness to tell her.[218]

The shining man (Voltaire) who had asked one of the cloaked figures (Tara) to look for a man offered to give another clue.[219]

So A Date - Part 2[]

This part was originally not listed in the storyline dropdown.

Elliot told Ashley that he wanted to tell her about magic but was unsure what were his secrets to tell. She said that he shouldn't tell her any secrets[220] but admitted that she was curious. Elliot said that he could tell her about his own transformation spells without betraying anyone's trust[221] and told Ashley that he had to transform to avoid energy buildups and offered to let her watch him transform. Ashley told him that they could do it in the book store since she knew its security blind spots.[222] They noted that transforming in the book store was a bit mischievous but decided to do it anyway.[223]

Nanase showed her fairy doll spell to Charlotte and Diane and offered to show them her summoned double.[224] Charlotte told the others that the less stealthy cloaked figure would probably need somewhere with food, water and shelter. When Ellen mentioned downtown Moperville, Nanase, Diane and Charlotte thought that would be a likely place.[225] They concluded that they couldn't do more and Diane suggested that Nanase play Mario Kart against her double.[226]

Elliot asked Ashley how she wanted his female form to look and she said that she preferred high contrast between before and after and asked for pink hair and her size or smaller. Elliot said that he would look like Ashley[227] since his thoughts would affect the result. Ashley suggested that saying "big boobs" would affect the result.[228] When Elliot transformed into a shorter female form with long pink hair and big boobs Ashley was impressed by the result.[229][230]

One of the cloaked figures (Tara) ran past Rhea, Rick and Elijah thinking of the clues "Castle of commerce to the west", "With potential mate" and "German dark".[231]

Part 2 was originally intended to begin here.[232]

Ashley suggested that Elliot go to a clothing store to look at his current form in the dressing room mirrors. She mentioned that it is legal to have surveillance cameras in dressing rooms if there are signs warning about it, which surprised Elliot. They talked about The Simpsons as one episode has a joke about cameras in dressing rooms[233] While they walked to the clothing store Ashley asked Elliot if the female form felt weird and he said that it didn't and that being unrecognizable felt liberating.[234] Elliot tripped when he said that walking while transformed wasn't a problem unless he thought about it.[235] Ashley said that he shouldn't be embarrassed as no one other than her knew who he was and he declared himself embarrassment-proof, but was then embarrassed because people were looking at him.[236]

When they were outside the dressing rooms, Ashley said that she couldn't enter the dressing room but Elliot said that he wouldn't undress[237] and insisted that they enter the dressing room together. Elliot said that there was no reason for modesty since he was transformed, which made both of them embarrassed.[238] They looked for reasons not to undress and Ashley pointed out that they hadn't kissed yet so they kissed.[239] Elliot stopped since they were outside the dressing room and they entered the dressing room. Catalina and Rhoda left another dressing room after kissing and Catalina wondered if other lesbian couples kissed in the dressing rooms.[240] When Elliot and Ashley left their dressing room they were embarrassed by what they had just done.[241]

Nanase lost to Fox at Mario Kart and Charlotte and Diane said that they had explanations but would let each other say their explanation first.[242] They suggested that Fox had access to Nanase's muscle memory but better focus and knew what Nanase would do. When Nanase pointed out that they were playing Mario Kart Charlotte concluded that Nanase was just unlucky.[243]

So A Date - Part 3[]

Mr. Tensaided called Elliot's phone.[244] Elliot immediately remembered when he showed himself as Cheerleadra to Tensaided during the summer (which he had done because Tensaided had hired him because Susan had told him that Elliot knew Cheerleadra, as shown in the storyline Rocks Fall Nobody is Hired), in a flashback sequence.[245]

In the flashback, Cheerleadra said that she was looking for Elliot. When Cheerleadra tried to leave,[246] Tensaided asked her to prove that she was Cheerleadra.[247] She showed Tensaided her flight.[248] Tensaided declared that he believed her and asked for her autograph.[249] When Tensaided asked how to contact Cheerleadra, Elliot (as Cheerleadra) asked Tensaided to call Elliot, which he promised to do only for emergencies.[250]

Thus Elliot, in the mall with Ashley, realized that the phone call was important.[250] Tensaided (hearing a feminine voice on the phone so assuming the person answering to be Elliot's girlfriend), told Elliot that a cloaked, apparently non-humanoid figure (Tara) had appeared at the mall asking for "Elliot German dark". (As Tensaided noted, Elliot's last name Dunkel is the German word for "dark", which was new information to Elliot.)[251] After the call, Elliot asked Ashley to go somewhere safe, gave her his phone to call Ellen and transformed to Cheerleadra to try to talk with the cloaked figure.[252] The transformation was seen by bystanders including Rhoda, who pointed Cheerleadra out to Catalina.[253]

Tara angrily called for 'Elliot German Dark' to show himself, saying "The word of an Ancient cannot be false" and "You will tell me where she is!"[254] Elliot as Cheerleadra spoke to her and Tara saw that Cheerleadra was a 'mage'.[255] Tara sat to talk and said "I am in search of Avalon". Elliot began to recall that a griffin had said this to him previously (shown as flashback in the storyline Identity[256]) but Tara impatiently demanded "Where is my wife?" and threw off her cloak, revealing herself to be a griffin.[257] Over Elliot's efforts to talk, Tara (who could see that 'Cheerleadra' was Elliot) said that she had the word of an Ancient that Elliot knew where her wife was. Elliot as Cheerleadra tried to explain (without giving away that she was Elliot) that Elliot had previously met a griffin but that Cheerleadra knew no more. Tara said that she could see through Elliot's disguise and threatened to kill him if he did not take her to her wife.[258] Elliot (still trying to remain incognito as Cheerleadra) protested that he did not know the whereabouts of the other griffin, while Tara insisted that Ancients cannot lie.[259] The griffin said that her wife was asking for help investigating the energy clog,[260] and attacked Elliot.[261] When Elliot as Cheerleadra was fleeing from the griffin she realized that she couldn't fight while flying.[262][263]

Meanwhile, Ashley called Ellen (who at first assumed her to be Elliot in a female form[264]) and told her about the griffin.[258] Ellen said that she had an idea of where to look for the griffin's wife and Ashley tried to tell Elliot but wasn't heard because of the crowd.[260] When Ashley tried to get closer a man in white (Voltaire) blocked her way and said that she couldn't save "the pawn of Chaos"[261] because the griffin is a knight from another world. Then he faded away.[265] Ashley realized that it was dangerous to distract Elliot and came up with a safer idea.[263] She kicked a soccer ball (that she had just bought from a store[266]) at the griffin to get her attention[267] and told her that she had friends who had an idea of where the griffin knight's wife was.[268]

Tara asked Ashley how she knew that she was a knight and Ashley answered that a magic man with pointy ears had told her. The griffin recognized the description as an Ancient and Elliot recognized it as an Immortal.[269] The Immortal appeared in front of them and warned Dame Tara that Ashley was Elliot's girlfriend.[270] Elliot accused the Immortal of lying and said that Immortals in this world were not forbidden from lying.[271] Tara became suspicious of the Immortal because he wanted her to ignore an offer to help finding her wife and because Ancients are supposed to speak in riddles.[272]

Helena, one of the Immortals watching Elliot, appeared and confirmed that Immortals can lie.[273] Helena's companion Demetrius appeared and said that Helena's intervention was unnecessary.[274] Tara apologized to Elliot and commanded the immortal in white to leave.[275] When the immortal left he said Elliot's name.[276] so that the bystanders heard it and Tensaided and Catalina concluded that Cheerleadra was the same Elliot Dunkel they knew.[277]

Helena and Demetrius told Elliot, Ashley and Tara how to leave the mall. Elliot said that Ashey didn't have to follow him but Ashley wanted to and pointed out that she had been seen, Tara expected her to help and Elliot drove her to the mall.[278] Tara made a loud noise while flying out at the same time as Elliot and Ashley[279] so the bystanders didn't see Elliot and Ashley leaving. The news reporter Carol Brown arrived too late to see them leave[280] so she asked for interviews.[281]

When Elliot and Ashley arrived at the parking lot they weren't dressed for the cold. Ashley undid her ponytail to avoid being recognized.[282] Once they were in Elliot's car Elliot told Ashley that Helena had instructed them to meet Tara at an empty parking lot. Elliot's phone had twelve missed calls from Ellen,[283] who was angry that they hadn't answered before and told them she thought they might have died because Nanase's fairy doll spell failed when she tried to contact Elliot.[284] When Elliot said that he and Ashley were going to meet Tara, Ellen insisted on joining them to explain to Tara why she had an idea of where Tara's wife was.[285]

Ellen wanted Charlotte and Diane to stay in their car for their safety while she and Nanase would meet Tara. Charlotte told Ellen, Diane and Nanase what she knew about the Tara encounter,[286] including that Elliot was Cheerleadra, which shocked Diane. When Diane asked how Elliot could be Cheerleadra if he was talking to Ellen on the phone, Ellen nervously said "Yes, that is what happened" to avoid telling Diane about Ashley.[287]

So A Date - Part 4[]

Dame Tara met Elliot and Ashley on a parking lot.[288] When Ellen and Nanase joined them, so did Charlotte and Diane even though Ellen wanted them to stay in the car.[289]

When Tara saw Nanase she was shocked[289] by the strength of Nanase's magical aura, saying that it indicated royal status.[290][291] Tara also said that her aura vision relealed that Cheerleadra is Elliot (confirming, to Diane's surprise, what Charlotte had read), that Ellen is Elliot's twin but has a different magic potential and that Diane was a potential vampire hunter.[291] When Ashley expressed surprise at vampires existing Nanase said that she helped kill one once.[292]

Tara asked Nanase's group why they had an idea of where her wife was.[292] Ellen tried to answer the question, possibly dishonestly, but Charlotte interrupted her and told Tara about their investigation and conclusions about the griffins.[293] Tara noted that her wife, Andrea was apparently not held captive and wondered why she hadn't gone home.[294] Elliot, Charlotte, Nanase and Diane talked about possible explanations. Ashley suggested that Andrea had a bad sense of direction and Tara said that she had.[295]

Tara said that Andrea would use a tall landmark and Charlotte said that there was a tall bell tower.[296] Tara said that she didn't need more help but Elliot wanted to see if Tara found her wife. When Elliot tried to say goodbye to Ashley since he had to fly she insisted on staying with them and so did Ellen, Charlotte, Nanase and Diane.[297] They decided that Ellen and Ashley would take Elliot's car; Nanase wanted to go with Diane and Charlotte to protect them but Diane was annoyed by her protectiveness and insisted that Nanase should go with Ellen.[298]

Charlotte asked Elliot to turn into Cheerleadra in front of the others[298] and Elliot did so even though he was embarrassed to do it in front of strangers. He wished that Cheerleadra had different clothes like uryuom outfits.[299] The resulting form was different from the usual Cheerleadra form, with a tight bodysuit and short hair.[300] Diane disliked the new Cheerleadra form's clothing.[301] Charlotte asked Elliot to change into the original Cheerleadra form to avoid giving the public evidence that Cheerleadra could transform but Ashley wanted to take pictures of the new Cheerleadra form first.[302] After they had been taking pictures for a while Nanase asked them to stop keeping Tara waiting.[303]

When the group was ready to go Nanase said that they should try to arrive at the same time. When Tara asked why she was worried, Nanase let slip that she thought Diane was Susan's sister.[304]

So A Date - Part 5[]

This chapter is long, so this article divides it into subchapters.

So A Date (vampire attack)[]

Nanase dragged Ellen and Ashley to Ellen's car, hoping to catch up with Diane's car. Elliot decided to follow the cars. Tara told Elliot that she was not from a separate universe but from "the first half of this one".[305] In Ellen's car Nanase asked Ashley if she had any questions and Ashley said that she wouldn't ask any since she thought she didn't have any right to ask questions of people she had just met.[306] They were cut off from Diane's car by a train. Nanase began worrying yet again, but was convinced to let it go by Ellen.[307]

In Diane's car Diane told Charlotte that she was unsure if she wanted to date Elliot since he thought the new Cheerleadra form's outfit was cool and she might not be able to compete with Ashley since she liked his transforming. Charlotte was more interested in learning that Diane was a potential vampire hunter but Diane wasn't interested and didn't believe it.[308] They argued whether they should be more interested in dating a man who already had a girlfriend or vampire hunting and Diane accused Charlotte of not caring about people.[309] Diane had an internal debate on whether to apologize.[310] When they arrived Diane tried to apologize but Charlotte didn't want to talk about it.[311]

Meanwhile, a spider-themed monster detected a "little baby hunter".[310] He attacked Diane when she and Charlotte had arrived.[312] Charlotte pushed the monster away from her.[313] The monster said that he didn't know which of the women could summon the bane since neither of them was close to awakening but was hungry enough for two and summoned knives.[314] In order to stall for time Diane asked the monster what he was and he explained that he was a vampire.[315]

Suddenly the vampire was attacked[315] by Andrea.[316] The vampire threw his knives at Andrea but missed and summoned new weapons.[317] Andrea disarmed the vampire.[318] The vampire said "To hell with low profiles" and summoned cartoon bombs.[319] Suddenly Tara killed the vampire[320] and sent the burning vampire and his bombs upwards[321] and the bombs exploded in the sky.[322] During the fight Diane went to check on Charlotte.[317][323] Diane expressed surprise at Charlotte saving her and Charlotte answered "Of course I did. You're my friend."[318] Elliot was impressed and scared by Tara's fighting prowess.[322] After the fight Charlotte needed Diane to recap the fight since she is nearsighted without her glasses.[324]

When Ellen, Nanase and Ashley arrived, Diane told them about the vampire.[325] Elliot told the group to leave because he thought the explosion would attract attention but everyone outside them mistook it for fireworks. Ellen and Elliot decided to meet at Charlotte's apartment.[326]

So A Date (debriefing with the griffins)[]

Andrea told Elliot that his Cheerleadra form suits him as it is cute. The griffins suggested heading to a secure place in the forest so that Andrea could explain the situation to the best of her understanding.[327] The forest was hard to cross. While they were on the way Ashley called Elliot with her cell-phone, and Elliot's Cheerleadra form received the call;[328] having merged forms with the phone, Cheerleadra could speak to Ashley but other voices were not transmitted.[329] Ellen said that she wouldn't trust herself (or Elliot) to ask the right questions.[330] Nanase tried to cast her fairy-doll to attend the meeting with the griffins but she didn't succeed until Ashley suggested that Cheerleadra didn't count as Elliot for the spell.[331] Andrea was highly impressed by the fairy-doll spell and the griffins explained that in their half of the universe, royal bloodlines had the most magic and so from her aura and powers they felt the need to address Nanase as royalty.[332] Elliot and Ashley agreed to hang up the call due to the confusion caused by Ashley hearing only Elliot.[333]

When Nanase guessed that Andrea was investigating a magic energy clog, Andrea explained that her world was the same world where they were and when Tara said that it's a different world for all intents and purposes Andrea objected for reasons that only she could understand.[334] She explained that every universe has (at least) two sides and that magic had stopped flowing back into her side at Moperville.[335] She didn't actually find anything new on this side, but she killed six vampires, not counting the aberration Tara finished off.[336] She also told the others that the Immortals who helped Tara and Elliot at the mall helped her hunt vampires and she suspected that they were withholding information to keep her doing it.[337] She pointed out that the spider vampire implied that he was part of an organized group.[338]

Meanwhile, Diane asked Charlotte why they stayed outside her apartment and they argued about the phrase "begs the question".[339] After the griffins, Elliot and Nanase talked about the immortal who deceived Tara, Andrea said that she had once told Tara that Immortals on this side of the world can lie, and Tara was slightly apologetic for not retaining the information.[340]

Elliot and Nanase offered to relay the information to people who could help - likely Tedd and Edward Verres - and the griffins agreed to contact them again at the same spot four weeks later.[341] Tara was sure she could find the spot again, but Elliot was not so sure he or Nanase could. Nanase pointed out that Elliot had demonstrated that his form had merged him with his cellphone, which had a GPS app. After a second of not being sure how to access the app in his current state, Elliot did so mentally.[342]

After the griffins left, Nanase told Elliot that they had to tell Susan and Diane that they were sisters and Susan was adopted since Diane was at risk from vampires.[343] Elliot said that they shouldn't tell Susan that she was adopted without confirming it and that they could ask Edward.[344] Nanase reluctantly agreed to ask him.[345]

Voltaire thought about his Plan CM.[346] The paranormal investigator Abner reported to Sirleck that Helena and Demetrius hunted vampires instead of watching Elliot.[347][348] Abner asked Voltaire, who provided him the information for Sirleck, what he was doing and said that he wouldn't help him more without knowing why. Voltaire said that he didn't need Abner to do more for him.[349]

While Elliot was flying to Charlotte's place, he realized how much he liked the superhero form, including that it made him cute and sexy. Since he embraced the form, he gained another spell.[350]

Nanase told Diane that she and Susan have a magic affinity for summoned weapons, which are a weakness of vampires. Diane realized that Nanase thought she and Susan were sisters and asked if Susan was adopted; Nanase reluctantly admitted that she didn't know.[351] Diane said that telling Susan that she was adopted was an important decision that shouldn't be made lightly.[352]

When Elliot arrived near Charlotte's apartment he considered entering as one of Cheerleadra's disguise forms but decided to change back to normal instead because the disguise forms had undesirable personalities.[353] When he met Ashley she was impressed by Nanase's fairy doll but Nanase was suspicious of Ashley.[354] At the apartment Nanase told Diane that Edward would know if Susan was adopted and possibly if Diane and Susan were related, Diane said that Charlotte wasn't a nerd and Elliot and Ashley kissed.[355]

Voltaire, impersonating Abner, told Sirleck that Adrian Raven was an immortal's (by implication Helena's or Demetrius's) son.[356] Sirleck investigated Raven[355] and planned an attack on him.[357]

EGSNP - Question Mark[]

This storyline was originally posted in the NP section and later reposted in the main story section between So A Date At The Mall and Q&A 7.

See Question Mark

After Sarah found her magic mark on Saturday morning (at the end of the storyline Squirrel Prophet), she decided that she had to find out what the spell does.[358] She tried many ideas but didn't manage to cast anything until Carol knocked on Sarah's bedroom door while she was undressed. When she opened the door she found Carol frozen in place.[359] Suddenly she returned to where she was when she heard Carol knocking. She realized that she had cast a simulated time stop spell. When she met Carol she tested her spell again.[360] During the test she accidentally switched bodies with Carol.[361]

See Question Mark Pt 2

In a Q&A-like intermission Amanda and Lisa clarified how Sarah's spell works.[362]

See Question Mark Pt 3

The following night Pandora visited Sarah while she was unsuccessfully trying to sleep. Pandora told Sarah she gave her the magic mark and that the spell is dangerous since it can discover things people would kill over.[363] She told her to tell her friends about the spell but warned her that Edward Verres would report the spell to his government agency and they might strongarm her into working for them. She also told Sarah about things she can do in the simulation.[364] She also told Sarah that she has a magic affinity for the spell and that it uses ambient energy and instructed her to use the spell often to awaken.[365] Sarah asked Pandora how old she was and Pandora implied that she was much more than two hundred years. Sarah then asked about Pandora and other immortals watching her and Pandora told her that immortals can hide even from each other.[366] Before Pandora left she said "Don't be boring". Sarah was scared by the thought of Pandora and other immortals being interested in her.[367]

Q&A 7 - The Requestioning[]

The specialty of this Q&A, hosted by Amanda and Lisa, is that they were shrunk and used a tablet as an interactive wall. Lisa thought the Q&A session shouldn't just be titled Q&A 7 and proposed the titles "Answer harder" (referencing Die Hard 2: Die Harder), "The Questioning" (referencing Highlander II: The Quickening) and "Requestionance" (referencing Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance).[368]

The first question was for a recap about magic. Lisa complained that it wasn't phrased as a question. The answer mentioned that magic users are dreaming or awakened, that people with magic marks are dreaming, that improper awakening causes energy buildups, that wizards can copy other people's spells, and that Tedd was expected to be a wizard because of his parents but instead has an unknown ability.[369]

Next question was about Diane's character development. Lisa thought it was about her transforming and noted that Diane hadn't transformed. The answer was that she hasn't changed completely as she is still relatively selfish, Diane's thoughts when she was introduced weren't shown, and that there has been plenty of time for her to to mature.[370]

To answer the question "Isn't making color comics just as easy as making greyscale comics?" Sarah showed up to explain that color comics are harder because there are more colors to choose among and they have to look good together.[371]

The next question was about Dan's pronouns. Lisa and Dan answered that he prefers male pronouns, but only because it raises fewer questions from people he doesn't want to talk to.[372]

Then Amanda and Lisa were asked about the range of Ellen's beams and whether her beams can bounce off mirrors. They didn't know so they tried to speculate. Then they received a telegram saying that the range is between thirty and three hundred feet depending on the power used and the beams bounce off mirrors but not less reflective surfaces.[373]

Th next question was "How common is transformation magic?" Amanda explained why it's the most common type of magic.[374]

Then it was asked whether Grace's shapeshifting and / or the transformation gun can make someone heal faster. The answer was that the transformation gun cannot heal injuries as the injuries will remain in some form and that Grace heals faster than humans but it's not directly related to her transformation powers.[375]

The next question was "Was El Goonish Shive always supposed to be so weird?" Amanda described the first two EGS stories Dan made, the first of which was about Tedd turning Sarah part-Pokemon and the second of which was The Goo. She also explained that Dan was initially nervous about how people would react to gender transformations, which explains some character reactions in Sister.[376]

Next question was whether Grace is predisposed to polyamory due to her uryuom heritage. Amanda tried to explain what polyamory is and answered that seyunolus are in general predisposed to polyamory or asexuality but that doesn't neccessarily mean that Grace is. When it was clarified that the readers wanted to know if a relationship between Grace, Tedd and Sarah could happen, Amanda ran away saying that the page was out of panels.[377] The next page explained that the original answer got the definition of polyamory wrong.[378]

On to whether Grace could awaken: Amanda answered that she could in theory but it would be very difficult and require suppressing her uryuom magic.[379] (Note: this answer is likely obsolete because of the magic change and might be more relevant to Noah.)

Next, Amanda answered that the only fantasy book series Dan has read were Harry Potter and The Dresden Files. Lisa asked the readers for suggestions.[380]

The next question was about events set up in Squirrel Prophet that hadn't happened yet (mainly Justin's date with Luke and Sarah's maybe-date withn Sam). Amanda answered that it took place the day before the last canon storyline, So A Date At The Mall. Lisa was incredulous since it took a long real time and many comic pages.[381]

Next, Amanda listed canon EGS:NP storylines: Magic Comic Shop, Not a Date at the Mall, Question Mark, Playing With Dolls, MV5 and Zombie Plans. Lisa said that Detective Block is canon as a joke.[382]

The next question was whether Greg has awakened. Amanda didn't know and gave reasons to think he has awakened and reasons he could still be dreaming.[383]

In answer to the next question, Amanda answered that spellbooks can be made by Immortals, by wizards or with wands, they automatically add overly verbose descriptions of a person's spells, and they disguise themselves with bad attempts at mundane titles.[384]

The wrap-up question was "Who is the muffin man?" Lisa and Amanda were confused by this question and eventually concluded that it was a joke question because the Q&A session was ending. Then they announced that the next story arc (Sister 3) would begin with a cover.[385]
